The Dominican Republic will soon host its first testing laboratory for certifying energy efficiency in domestic air conditioning equipment, announced the Ministry of the Environment this Tuesday.

The new laboratory, set to be established at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), is funded by the Multilateral Fund of the Montreal Protocol. This initiative aims to enhance the country’s technological capabilities and develop public policies that promote energy efficiency in residential settings.

Technological progress has the potential to cause significant disruption in labor markets, but also to create new job opportunities for people in Central America and the Dominican Republic. Advances in agricultural and industrial machinery, computers, and now artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled machines to undertake many tasks previously done by humans, which puts jobs at risk.

The US and Costa Rica have a similar goal, albeit for different reasons. They both want to grow the microchip manufacturing industry in the Central American country. For Costa Rica, greater FDI means a more skilled workforce, greater capital inflows, and fits into the country’s long term economic plans. On the other hand, the US is desperate to reduce their overwhelming dependency on the South Asian market for microchips.

The global challenge of securing the right talent in the right place is one that nearly every company faces, especially since the pandemic. However, the Dominican Republic has emerged as a pleasant surprise for many international businesses operating there, particularly due to the quality of its local workforce. During a recent visit by David Lee of Keysight Technologies, Cesar Ozeta, Plant Manager of Vishay's facility in the Dominican Republic, emphasized this point, stating, "What impresses me most about this country is the availability and quality of human resources."

The Dominican Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Dr. Franklin García Fermín, met with Nicaraguan Ambassador Jessica Padilla Leiva to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and promoting academic exchanges between universities in both countries. The meeting focused on opportunities for professor exchanges, student mobility, and the development of international postgraduate and master’s programs.
